Selwyn House pupil’s alter ego is Shrek-tacular TRANSFORMED: After an hour in the make-up chair, Cleo McLeod is transformed from a Selwyn House pupil into a mean, green Shrek the ogre. She joins iconic fairy tale characters like Pinocchio, The Big Bad Wolf and The Gingerbread Man on-stage in the lead role for the school’s production Shrek the Musical Jnr, which starts on Friday. •Story, page 4
Mall comes out of the 1990s By Julia Evans THE EARLY stages of taking Merivale Mall out of the 1990s are on track to be finished by early November. Modernising “dated” shop fronts and bathrooms are just stages one and two of the five step mall upgrade, mall manager Nicola Dolan said. “The final scope is yet to be decided for the jobs next and they are the most expensive, so I don’t really have a definitive number,” Mrs Dolan said. She said the overall upgrade will hopefully be completed by early November 2018. She won’t say how much the
upgrade will cost. “It’s been such a long time in the making, last time the mall was updated was 1998 so we’re pretty excited,” Mrs Dolan said. Stage one is “pushing up and out” shop fronts to create a more open space, she said. While stage two is a total renovation of the pre-1998 bathrooms. Mrs Dolan said AMP Capital, which owns the mall, expects tenants’ shop fit-outs to follow suit and fit in with the new look of the mall. “There is an expectation that shops will follow in step like Kimberleys, Hartleys and Es-
quires have,” she said. But in the upgrade process, the mall is losing one of its oldest tenants. Paper Plus will go and Whitcoulls will move in.

Paper Plus co-owner Simon Grant said the mall’s owner had accepted a higher rent from Whitcoulls which he couldn’t match.
It was “gutting” and he didn’t like to let down the loyal customer base the store has grown over the 23 years it has been there. “There are a lot of things that we do that Whitcoulls doesn’t, but I guess the landlords are thinking about rent,” he said. Mrs Dolan said she had “gone into bat” for Paper Plus and was sad to see the store leave. But at the end of the day, it wasn’t able to compete. Stage three, upgrading the Fresh Choice storeroom, is also under way, but stage four and five, flooring and updating the “ambience” of the mall, won’t begin until next year, she said.

IF IT’S wet on Saturday Timaru Boys’ could have the upper hand in the UC Championship final against Christchurch Boys’ High. They’ve got a fairly dominant forward pack and Timaru has been the team with the momentum in the competition over the past months. That insight into the final doesn’t come from me – but from Star Media’s sports reporters Gordon Findlater and Andrew King. In the round robin match CBHS won a hard fought battle in Timaru, and everything points to the same this weekend, Findlater says. King says utility Rico Syme, could be the difference towards the business end of the match. He’s a gained a bit of reputation in being a game breaker. So the prediction: King: CBHS 33-31. Findlater: TBHS: 17-15. For more go to page 6. – Barry Clarke

CONFUSION: The signals at the intersection of Colombo St and Edgeware Rd have divided public opinion.
“It was a stupid idea putting parking outside the shops near the traffic lights,” she wrote. And Colombo St business owner Carolyn Moffat wrote that profit is down considerably. “Business owners were hoping that things would improve once the cycle lane had finished but the congestion means people are avoiding the area altogether,” she wrote. She said most businesses in the area have been suffering

BOYS’ HIGH BOMB SCARE Christchurch Boys’ High School students were evacuated by police after a suspicious package was identified. After 40 minutes of gathering on the school’s field, students were given the all clear to return to class. Headmaster Nic Hill said the students weren’t in danger at any stage. TOILET BLOCK REPAIRS City council ground work in St Albans Park is expected to begin in spring and now a group of stakeholders are set to work on plans to fix the out of action toilet pavilion. The group, made up of city council staff, Christchurch Metro Cricket members and the Mainland Football Federation, as well as St Albans Shirley Football Club, Edgeware Bowls and Edgeware Croquet, met recently to discuss the work. PALMS BUS STOP UPGRADE Bus stops outside The Palms Shopping Centre are set to double in size to accommodate the number of passengers in the area. The city council is seeking feedback on the plan that will see a suburban bus interchange outside the mall. Two bus stops are set to be upgraded, one on Shirley Rd adjacent to Shirley Intermediate School. The second is on New Brighton Rd outside the south end of the mall.

since the roadworks began and even though they are complete, it’s too late. But many readers agree that congestion is the fault of motorists and the intersection is much better now. “This is a driver problem, nothing more, stop in the right spot and you’ll trigger the lights. The cycleways have improved this area for cyclists and pedestrians,” James David Foote wrote.

OPINION IS divided over the effectiveness of the lights at the intersection of Colombo St and Edgeware Rd. The Rise Up Christchurch Facebook post received more than 60 readers’ comments. Some expressed frustration, labelling the intersection a “death trap” and “nightmare”. Last week Nor’West News revealed anger and frustration at the intersection. The city council said it was caused by motorists not approaching the lights correctly and not triggering the phasing. But Bailies Bar and Restaurant co-owner Richard Norton said the city council needed to do something as drivers had taken to rat running through the car park to avoid congestion, which would end in an accident. Julie Nicholson wrote on Facebook that she had waited behind a parked car on Colombo St thinking it was traffic turning left.
Even ViaStrada senior traffic engineer and transport planner Glen Koorey weighed in on the issue. He suggested that it was actually the long standing roadworks in the area that might have caused the decrease in business turnover. “No car parking has been lost in the finished product and now more people can easily walk and bike to the shops, so why would businesses be down in the long run?” He wrote it had to be upgraded because it “wasn’t fine” left as a unsignalised T-intersection. And Jo French agreed, saying the upgrades were part of making the intersection safer. “The intersection is less dangerous than it was and so long as everyone follows the new rules, it will continue to be so,” she wrote.

also selected for inclusion in the All Stars band off the back of their performance at the jam. Judges selected those they considered to be the best on each instrument. Then, after only a two hour rehearsal, they performed in a gala concert on August 12. The jazz band also won a gold medal at the Ara JazzQuest earlier this month. And the school’s Jazz Combo band won silver medals at both ARA JazzQuest and Southern Jam as well.
By Julia Evans CURTAIN CALL is almost ready for Selwyn House’s Shrek the Musical Jnr. After weeks of rehearsals, pupils are ready to perform their biannual production to audiences for three shows on Friday and Saturday. Shrek is a one-of-a-kind, hilarious fairy tale in which curses are reversed, monsters get the girls, donkeys and dragons find love, and princesses are beautiful in all shapes and sizes. Director Therese Bierwirth, said Shrek was chosen because of how funny it is and it has all the well-known fairy-tale characters, such as Pinocchio and the Big Bad Wolf. “It also has a serious understory so that the girls in the production can make connections to real world issues,” Ms Bierwirth said. She said the 73 strong cast have put their heart and soul into bringing the production to life. “They are having a great deal of fun while learning that a full blown production of this nature needs to be polished, slick and well oiled. They have also learnt about the importance of theatre business including stagecraft, and how everything works

News Young artist’s big chance Fashion By Julia Evans IMAGINE SEEING your sculpture on display in the city alongside the likes of Antony Gormley and Ronnie van Hout. That’s about to become a reality for 16-year-old Villa Maria student Ruby Williams. Ruby won the senior section of the Re:ACTIVATE project organised by SCAPE Public Art and will soon see her sketches come to life as a sculpture in Hagley Park. Although the honour doesn’t come with the same $800,000 pay check that Gormley received. Ruby’s design relates to the concept of memory and will involve recreating a tree’s lost limb out of metal mesh. The sculpture will be on display in September for six weeks. The design was of a live tree with its branch previously sawn off due to damage or disease, Ruby said. “Replacing that branch with a wire mesh copy resembling the memory of the limb that used to be there. The city is similar in some regards – it fell during the earthquake and was completely changed, parts of it were gone but not forgotten.” Engineers from Lewis and Bradford have been tasked with taking Ruby’s idea and making it a reality.

OPPORTUNITY: Ruby Williams with her original sketches.
She met with the engineers, SCAPE art staff and Botanic Gardens staff to choose the perfect tree. “I have always loved art and creating things,” Ruby said. “This experience is incredibly surreal to me. As for my future, I am unsure what path I will go down but there is a 100 per cent chance it will be a creative one.”

Rotary club awards young totara MAORI LEADERS are likened to the “mighty” totara tree. So the Rotary Club of Belfast Kaiapoi think it’s only appropriate to identify its future leaders “young totaras” as well. This year that honour was given to Kaiapoi High School’s Alexandra McCracken, (right) 17. At a special Rotary meeting, Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey, presented Alexandra her award before she planted a totara tree in the Styx Mill Reserve on Husseys Rd. The young totara award publicly recognises the positive achievements of young people, promoting sound role models for our youth and fostering responsible attitudes toward the community. Alexandra embodies this through her impressive schooling and extra curricular work, the club said.

CBHS set to defend UC champs title against Timaru By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High will look to defend their UC Championship title against Timaru Boys’ High on Saturday. They are in the final after a tough, come-from-behind battle against Nelson College, which required the depth off the bench to get them home 40-34 after trailing 29-12 at halftime. The last time CBHS met Timaru was in round three, with CBHS winning 22-17. Starting fullback Rico Syme, who is a recent addition to the first XV due to injuries, slotted into first-five in the second half against Nelson and provided a few moments of magic to help the team get home. The final will be played at CBHS’s Straven Rd ground. They have made a bit of a habit of going behind and then making a comeback, but they will look to correct that on Saturday. Timaru made the final after a solid 24-10 over Christ’s College in Timaru. Meanwhile, St Bede’s will play Marlborough Boys’ College in the bowl final after beating Shirley Boys’ High 36-33, while St Andrew’s missed out on a spot in the plate final after a 57-14 defeat to Waimea Combined.

St Andrew’s makes bid SPORTS for boys and girls titles By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College has the opportunity to do the double with both its boys and girls football teams making the finals in their competitions. The boys team known as ‘the thistles’ ground-out a 1-0 win over Cashmere High last week to book themselves in the final. The girls team cruised past Burnside High 3-0 to make the final against Cashmere High who beat Rangiora High 3-1. Both finals will be played on August 30 at English Park. St Andrew’s boys coach Matt Jansen said it was an awesome feeling to make the final and the boys are really keen to take it home. “They [St Thomas] have been a really competitive team this year. They beat us in the regional finals in futsal, then beat us 1-0 to win the league, so now, it’s spoiling time,” he said. “We are looking to take the momentum from this final into the nationals.” Cashmere coach Craig Squire

said it was disappointing to not make the final. “We played well in a very tight game with not many chances for both teams,” he said. “The coaching team are very proud of the effort the team has put in and continue to put in to developing their football and improving each week.” In the other boys semi-final, Burnside High and St Thomas saw the back of the net bulge with eight goals with the team known as ‘the saints’ getting past ‘the beasts’, 5-3. We won this tournament two years ago when it was in Papamoa so it would be great to have our names on it again,” he said. In the plate final, St Bede’s will take on last year’s champions Lincoln High at English Park on August 30. St Bede’s cruised into the final with a comfortable 4-0 win over Christchurch Boys’ High, while Lincoln beat Shirley Boys’ High 1-0.

Aldridge continues golden run at karate tournament By Andrew King PAPANUI HIGH School’s Britney Aldridge has continued her stunning form winning gold at the world karate championships on the Gold Coast. The 18-year-old won gold with her team in the senior women’s kata and bronze in the individual female senior open event at the tournament earlier this month. It backs up her gold in the female 18 and over, under-55kg kumite, and the female under-21, under-65kg kumite categories, as well as bronze in the under-21 kata at the national karate championships in Wellington. Aldridge said it was an incredible feeling. “We won 2013 gold in the junior team, too, so taking out the senior open this year was just the cherry on top,” she said. She now turns her attention to the Goju world karate championship in Romania in September, where she will defend her 2015 title before the junior world under-21 karate competition in Spain in October.

HEALTH & AWARENESS
RSI, OOS or Gradual Process Injury can be treated!
What causes OOS? The Department of Labour states: “One of the favourable explanations for OOS is that it is caused by muscles being held tense or tight for too long.’’
These conditions may be caused by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, vibrations, mechanical compression, or sustained or awkward positions. The shorter and tenser the muscle, the harder it pulls on the places it attaches to (e.g. the bone). When this happens in the forearm the pull at those attachments and tendons causes irritation and inflammation of those areas. This will be noticed as pain in the elbow and wrist. When this happens in the neck and shoulder area, it will be noticed as local pain, stiffness and sometimes headaches. The nerves run right through the muscles. Tension on the muscles causes pressure on the nerves. As the muscles shorten, the nerves running through them have a tendency to both shorten and slide less well. This causes the nerves to radiate pain throughout the arm. Triggerpoints are areas in your muscles, where a few muscle fibres have contracted
Physical Sense has published the “OOS in a knot. These knots (the hard and painful originate in your Client Information Booklet”. It is full of areas in your muscles felt during massage) neck. FOCUS ON HEALTH Supporting Your Time Honoured Remedy Bowel & Digestive Function Helps Prevent Disease
Keeping your digestive system and bowels functioning efficiently is definitely an important step in obtaining and maintaining good long term health. It is most important to keep the whole digestive and elimination systems of the body working efficiently. Many diseases have been linked with micro-organisms (virus) or a bacterial component. We know that when the digestive system and bowel function are poor we have many more health problems. These include arthritis, digestive problems like reflux and stomach pain, bladder infections, chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rashes, poor eyesight, pain and inflammation, tumors and a weakened immune system just to name a few. Nature’s Sunshine LBS II contains a highly effective blend of natural herbs to support the whole digestive system and it is especially effective at cleansing the lower bowel and intestinal tract. It is commonly used for arthritis, constipation, diarrhea, digestive problems, dry stool, fever, colds and influenza, flatulence, gallstones, gout, skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, urinary infections, liver dysfunction, Candida, weakened immune function and for people who want to keep their health as good as possible. The herbs in LBS II help stimulate the production of digestive fluids and bile for efficient digestion. This alone may help prevent many diseases as a properly working digestive system will itself neutralise many disease causing organisms. LBS II also stimulates peristaltic action of the colon effectively cleansing the colon of any accumulated build-ups of waste material. It also relaxes abdominal cramping and spasms, enhances liver function, purifies the blood, neutralizes acidic conditions, helps destroy intestinal parasites and worms, and fights infection. Keeping your digestive system and bowels functioning efficiently is definitely an important step in obtaining and maintaining good long term health. LBS II and further information is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, Phone: 388-5757. We are Always Happy to Help!

According to a country Doctor “D.C. Jarvis” from Vermont in the USA cider vinegar and honey (CV & H) can be an important part of a long healthy life. Dr. Jarvis noted Vermonters who regularly consumed cider vinegar and honey had excellent health with many putting in a vigorous day’s work on the farm even when well into their eighties. Dr. Jarvis found the effects of cider vinegar and honey on arthritis can be remarkable with many patients reporting almost total relief after taking a course. As well as a general tonic Dr. Jarvis found regular administration of cider vinegar and honey at the onset of complaints such as the common cold, sinusitis, asthmatic attacks, hay fever, and childhood diseases such as
chicken pox and measles, was accompanied by an improvement in the condition with symptoms either disappearing, or the conditions were extremely mild and soon over. Apple cider vinegar contains all the goodness of the apple in a form that is readily accepted by the body. Scientists have found over 90 different substances in ACV, among them 20 important trace elements, minerals, essential enzymes, a number of different acids including malic acid, amino acids and roughage in the form of potash and pectin. A scientific study at the Shizuka University in Japan has proven ACV to have potent antioxidant benefits (It can destroy free radicals, which are a major factor in ageing.) and also the ACV can
15
break down cholesterol formations in the blood vessels. ACV and H is a powerful tonic that also promotes digestion, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste, and helps neutralize any toxic substances that enter the body. It is important to note not all cider vinegar is made in the traditional way and results are likely to prove disappointing with some other vinegars. Further information is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, Phone: 388-5757. We are Always Happy to Help!
McKenzie Lifestyle Village McKenzie Lifestyle Village is in the final stages of completion. There are still great sites available and we also have a number of affordable villas ready for immediate occupation. Our beautiful Leisure Centre is available and the pools, gymnasium and library and lounge area are in use daily. Outside, the bowling green is very popular along with Petanque, Mini-golf and Table Bowls. The residents enjoy an enviable resort style lifestyle. It is also surprisingly affordable. A former Christchurch resident, Judith, says “We couldn’t have all this for what we are paying if we were still in Christchurch.” Another resident, David, says “my wife and
I have never been so well off as we are now we moved to McKenzie Lifestyle Village.” There are fuller testimonials on the village homepage at mlv.co.nz. Geraldine is a great little town with a very pleasant microclimate. There is plenty to do in and around the town with art galleries, theatre and cinema, interesting shops and boutiques, two museums and a wide range of good places to eat. For the more adventurous there are river and forest walks nearby, opportunities for biking and a choice of two local golf clubs. For more information you can talk to David Connolly about this on 0800 84 55 24.

Emma’s back! THAT’S right folks, Emma Palaamo has returned to the Richmond Club Bistro, and this time she is running it! Emma last worked at the Club when her parents Bev and Steve Palaamo were running the Bistro and Restaurant pre-EQ. Unsure of what she wanted to do when she left school Emma decided to attend university where she earned a degree in English and Psychology. “I’ve wondered if I’d ever use my degree, but I love being in the kitchen. Cooking’s in my blood. It’s what I’m used to,” said Emma. Largely trained by her father, Emma said she was nervous when she was initially offered running the Bistro. “My parents have such a good reputation and I don’t want to let Dad down. The reaction to my menu and cooking has been great, and regular members are very happy to see me back.” With her first few weeks spent gauging what diners wanted, Emma is confident she has streamlined the menu to provide a selection to satisfy everyone. “I’ve listened to what they want and have taken heed. by bringing back the old with new. I’m also doing blackboard specials and two course specials, as well as introducing a Kids’ menu.” The Club Bistro is open for LUNCH Tuesday to Sunday (Brunch), for DINNER Wednesday to Sunday and is also available for private functions. The Richmond Club, 75 London St, phone 389 5778. www.rwmc.co.nz
